#652 German Art and Degenerate "Art": Work of Art and Caricature as Mirror of the Worldview is translated from the Third Reich original Deutsche Kunst und entartete "Kunst": Kunstwerk und Zerrbild als Spiegel der Weltanschauung, which was published by Dr. Adolf Dresler in Munich in 1938. The first part, roughly 27 pages of text, consists largely of Adolf Hitler’s speech at the opening of the House of German Art, and includes his fascinating analysis of "modern art". The second part, roughly 46 pages, juxtaposes "degenerate art" juxtaposes "degenerate art" and "German art" with the same subject but totally different perspectives. Perhaps one picture does indeed speak a thousand words. But here, two pictures speak far more than just two thousand. The degenerate art may seem pretty tame by today’s standards, sometimes even amusing. (Ironically, the eagle on page 32 looks quite similar to the one on a pre-Euro West German coin. #656 STRUGGLE AS LIFE LAW is translated from the Third Reich original Der Kampf als Lebensgesetz. It was published as the fifth 1944 issue in the series of Guidelines of the High Command of the Armed Forces published by the NS Leadership Staff of the High Command of the Armed Forces, which in turn had the task of promoting National Socialist spirit in the officer corps. Interestingly enough, it was not offered for sale to the general public, even though it was essentially a reprint of a Reich Schooling Theme of the NSDAP. Indeed, a note on the back cover even admonishes that it should only be ordered through official channels. The original nineteen black and white illustrations are also included. As the title already indicates, the theme, of course, is that life is struggle. This applies to the individual – man and woman, soldier and civilian – as well as the whole folk. SC. 72pp. $10.00. #657 EUROPEAN FRONT: SOLDIERS BUILD EUROPE is translated from the Third Reich original Europäische Front: Soldaten bauen Europe by Walther Tröge. The theme is that the soldierly idealism and the Greater Europe idea are the driving force behind both the Waffen-SS volunteers from throughout Europe as well as German’s Axis allies, many of which were led by military men. Hence there are sections on not only Germany, but also on Italy, Romania, Finland, Hungary, Slovakia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Spain, Portugal and even France. The role of various European nations in the defense of Europe against non-European invaders throughout history is emphasized as well as England’s negative influence, namely its policy of encouraging European disunity and playing the European powers against each other while it built its own overseas empire – largely through theft! Furthermore, the German Reich idea is contrasted to that of the British Empire.
