Social Networking: The Unconventional Weapon In Modern Console Warfare | | Xbox 360 launched in North America on November 22, 2005, the Playstation 3 in Japan on November 11th, 2006, and the Nintendo Wii in both locations on November 19th, 2006. For the sake of arguments, let's say the current generation of the "Console Wars" started on the release of the latter when all three were in play. For various reasons, especially that nothing prevents people from owning more than one console, it really hasn't been that much of a "war." Despite bumpy launches and occasional errors, all three consoles are doing fairly well in their own niches.
One thing makes this generation of console profoundly different from previous ones: the internet. All three consoles come out of the box with the capability to connect to the home network and the outside world. This means they can download software updates and the manufacturers can sell you games (for a small fee, of course). It's also possible now for the consoles' users to connect with each other, to exchange messages (sometimes with photos) and to play in each others' games.
